Barbara Johansen Newman is the author and illustrator of Tex Mex Rex: A Big City Kitty Ditty, which was published in April 2007. She is also the illustrator of more than 15 books for children, including the ongoing Jeffrey Bones series by David A. Adler, and the continuing Doyle and Fossey series by Michele Torrey. In addition, she has been an editorial illustrator for newspapers, magazines, corporations and advertising since 1982.

Before writing and illustrating, Barbara was an award winning soft sculpture artist, exhibiting in craft galleries throughout the US and Canada. She was also a puppeteer, performing with her husband as part of as Moonberry Puppet Theater. Because of her background creating figures, and performing with puppets, Barbara brings a love of developing expressive characters to her illustration work.

When Barbara is not writing or drawing, she is avidly hunting for vintage “junque,” especially cookies jars, cowboy collectibles, and carnival chalkware. She lives in Massachusetts, with her husband, three sons, a cache of Seeburg jukeboxes from the 50’s and an emotionally needy Bull Dog named Bitty.
