HELEN FOGWILL PORTER

Helen was born, grew up and still lives in St. John's
Newfoundland. Her first book, Below the Bridge,
was published in 1980.
For about thirty-five years she has been writing
fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama and reviews. Her work has been
featured in many anthologies and her stories, poetry and reviews have
been published in Canadian magazines and journals, and overseas. She has
written ten plays which have been produced for radio and/or stage. Most
of Helen's work is set in St. John's; she is keenly interested in
regional speech.
Her young adult novel January,
February, June and July won the Young Adult Canadian Book Award,
presented by the Canadian Library Association in 1988. In 1993, Helen
received the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council's Lifetime Achievement
Award. In 1997, Helen received an honorary doctor of letters degree
from the Memorial University of Newfoundland.
