Writer, Katherine Jacob, has travelled worldwide, from trekking
to Machu Picchu,
tracing family routes in the Balkans, and horseback riding along the Oregon Trail, to sea kayaking with Orcas
in the Pacific Ocean, skiing under the midnight sun in Lapland, and dogsledding along the Moose River near Hudson’s Bay.
Her cultural focus has included a wide variety of places from historical cities such Florence, Italy and Quito, Ecuador,
to backstreet blues bars in Louisianna and the neon facades
of Las Vegas.
She has written hundreds of travel and cultural articles and columns for a variety of
national and international newspapers, such as The Globe and Mail,
The Toronto Star and
The Boston Globe, and magazines such as Equinox,
Backpacker and Explore.
She is the author of a series of Canadian best sellers:
44 Country Trails,
Bruce Peninsula Trails,
Grand River Country Trails, The Best of the Bruce Trail,
Trails of the Oak Ridges Moraine and
Grand River Country Trails 2. Proceeds from this book series have supported the following environmental,
conservation and charity projects: The Record Literacy Fund (Kitchener-Waterloo), Thompson Creek Restoration
at the
Grand River (Dunnville), Mountsbeg Centre for Birds of Prey (Campbelville), The Grand River Trail
(Kitchener-Waterloo), Stacey Meadow Habitat Restoration (Hamilton), Black Creek Conservation Area Trail (Port Dover),
Groundwater Protection
on the Oak Ridges Moraine (Toronto) and the Bruce Trail Association.
"The writing I've done, especially for outdoor activities and
the environment, has always been
with the hope that nature
will be valued and therefore preserved,” says Jacob.
“It's why the trail series is important to me because proceeds have gone toward various environmental projects.
Through the sales of Grand River Country Trails, for example, more than $30,000
was raised to build a section of the
Walter Bean Grand River Trail along the Canadian Heritage River."
Katherine also holds a Masters in Environmental Literature and Writing, and teaches writing workshops.
She is currently writing a memoir based on her travels.
