KIM FIRMSTON
Kim Firmston has never won a Governor General’s literary award nor has she met Margaret Atwood. Nevertheless, she has written a few successful plays.
The Block, Wex and The Rock n’ Roll Trolls have been performed in and around the Calgary area.
However playwriting is only one of Kim Firmston’s talents. She can talk at great length about the history of punk, remain intact in most mosh pits and turn any conversation on its head. Writing young adult novels, teaching and listening to music at an obscene volume are some of her main obsessions. She has introduced numerous children to writing including daughter Emily, who won a high commendation in the 2006 Speakeasy Young Writers competition in England.
Although Kim Firmston has lived in more places than she can remember, she now resides in Calgary where she volunteers with Girl Guides, acts as treasurer for the Alexandra Writers’ Centre Society and works on many of the youth initiatives in her community. She lives with her daughter Emily and her husband Bill who she met while researching her novel Boiled Cat. No cats were harmed in the making of the novel.
