The True North: Graphic Tales of Canada is written and illustrated by National Post graphic columnist Steve Murray. Working at the Post, Steve has created works of comics journalism, putting himself in strange and unusual situations, and this book is no different as he acts as a narrator for the larger subject of Canadian history. Featuring dozens of comic vignettes, Steve takes the reader through moments both large and small from the country's past and distills them into witty and insightful visual articles. Tales ranging from the rise of the FLQ to a Prime Minister's dog séances, The True North makes history fresh and relevant.
Rendered in an open and inviting black & white ink wash style, The True North, like Chester Brown's Louis Riel, provides a distinct visual take on Canadian history. But with its light tone and its author navigating the story as a rendered narrator, these vignettes call to mind the easily-accessible works of Scott McCloud. Filled with humour and history, The True North will make you rethink our stoic, staid nation.
