Johanna Hurwitz

Johanna Hurwitz is the author of more than 60 books for young readers. They range from the very simple level of Ethan Out and About which is made up of four stories of eight sentences each, early chapter books like Russell Sprouts, middle grade fiction such as Class Clown, historical novels like Faraway Summer and the YA title Even Stephen. In addition she has written a some biographies including Anne Frank: Life in Hiding, and Helen Keller: Courage in the Dark. Her books have won many honors including ten children’s choice awards from around the U.S..

Many of her titles have been sold simultaneously in Weekly Reader Book Club, Junior Library Guild, Troll Book Club, as well as Harcourt Brace, McGraw Hill & Houghton Mifflin.

Born and raised in New York City, Johanna has a master’s degree in library science from Columbia University and worked for many years as a children’s librarian in both school and public libraries. She is a frequent speaker at schools and conferences around the country and in recent years has even been invited to speak abroad in South Africa, Morocco, Poland, Spain, India and other places.

She is married, the mother of two grown children and grandmother of three.
