Kris Hirschmann earned a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology with honors from Dartmouth College in 1988. She has worked at various times as an editor, a layout artist, a graphic designer, and a magazine editor-in-chief. She eventually became Creative Director at Pace Products, a children's publisher/packager that worked with many national clients.

At Pace, she discovered her life calling: writing for kids, especially science writing, with an ability to translate difficult concepts into kid-friendly, easy-to-understand text and experiments. She also developed and wrote arts & crafts books, activity kits, early-learning products, and fiction.

In 1999, she left Pace to launch a freelance career. It was a leap of faith but a successful one: since then, she has been hired to write hundreds of children's books.
